Field Notes from 3/23/21

  •   Flight Crew #4: Bryan Jacobs and Matt Watson
  • Both partners need to contribute to checklists
    • One reads off the step and the other double checks to verify the step is completed or is acceptable
  • Lab/Outings depend on weather
  • Field notes will be a common assignment from now on
  • Save data to an external hard drive or OneDrive for later use
  • Safety vests are needed to distinguish between UAS students, hobbyists, or other majors
  • Cannot have different flights at once
  • Use Qualtrics form (Brightspace) to give a notice for flights
    • Allows for PWA or Martell Forest to know experienced operators are out in the field
    • Must be at least 24 hours in advance
  • Must have microSD that is 16GB or better
  • Make sure you know how to use Measure before going into the field, how to start a mission (Assigned or not), and how to create one
  • Do not checkout Mavics until the quiz is taken and have demonstrated the ability to start and execute missions on phone and MGC
  • Several quizzes will cover the Bramor for the same purpose as the Mavic quiz
  • If weather permits, labs will be meeting at PWA to engage in flights
  • Graded on quality of the data
  • Will be graded on field notes and report for these outings
  • Checklists are within Week 10 (Mavic 2 and Bramor)

Mission planning has become an apparent need within the different applications of UAS. Measure Ground Control (MGC) is a mission planning software that integrates flight plans, NAS map, and the ability to fly freely with DJI drones.  Methods To better explore the functionality of MGC, this lab explored the different features that it has to offer. Volumetric Analysis

  Introduction Building upon the map fundamentals learned from the lab demo before, the data from the Wolf Paving Piles are used once again for volumetric analysis, but data from the Litchfield Paving Piles area was also used for volumetric analysis and for other data processing. Volumetric analysis is a form of chemical analysis which measures the volume a substance occupies, which in the context of this lab it will be used to measure the volume of the paving piles. ArcGIS Pro has a series of tools and functions that were used to complete this lab demo, which will be discussed in detail later in this post. Methods To perform volumetric analysis, the Extract by Mask tool was used on three separate paving piles. The tool essential outlines a certain section of a raster and masks it as its own raster. Week 13 Deliverables

  As the construction went on and the burn plot was finished, this field outing was used to create a 3D model of the construction trailers, and vehicles, while collecting data to show differences in the south burn plot. Similar to the field outing in the prior week, the flight took place at PWA over the construction, south burn plot, and the salamander tanks. The data will be used for comparison in a later field outing, similarly to the first field outing. The metadata is posted below from the flight that was performed.
