AT 309 Lab 4: Exploring Satellite Imagery

Image
Introduction  Electromagnetic energy is radiation that consists of alternating electric and magnetic fields. This type of energy comes in waves that travel at the speed of light. These waves can travel at various wavelengths and frequencies. Depending on these two factors, it changes the micrometers and the type of electromagnetic radiation that is being given off. The typical range we can see is from 0.4 micrometers to 0.8. Figure 1 visualizes the spectrum and highlights the portion humans can see, which was provided by PhysicalGeography.net. Figure 1: As we can see, the spectrum contains a lot of varying wavelengths and frequencies. The spectrum has shorter and more frequent waves at the left side of the spectrum with the opposite on the other side. Although not all of these waves are visible to the human eye, multispectral images can be manipulated to share the types of radiation that are present and what is being reflected. One way to look into this type of information ...

AT 309 Lab 3: Introduction of Remote Sensing

Image
Introduction Ever since history has started being documented, humans have been obsessed with looking at things at a birds-eye view. Maps give us exactly that without requiring the hardware to do so. For the select few that have the hardware, there are different applications with this type of data: orthomosiacs, geospatial data, counterintelligence, remote sensing to name a few. Focusing our attention on the gist of the lab, Remote Sensing is the process of analyzing an object, area, or phenomenon through acquired data using a that is not intertwined with the subject being analyzed. A lot of the technology being used is satellites and more recently UAS. The use of UAS within the Remote Sensing industry relates to a much smaller application. There are lots of software that make accessing these types of data easier, such as ArcGIS Earth. This software enables users to access a wide library of online data sets and have tools relating to elevation. Methods For the purpose of this l...

AT 309 Lab 2: Digital Transformation

Introduction The year is 1492 and Columbus finds North America. We basically know this story and how it essentially turns into the U.S. we have today. Through the span of until now, 2020, technology has drastically evolved. Along with this transformation of various technologies, we have been performing something called digital transformation in more recent years. Digital Transformation is the process of transforming hardware or outdated technology into digital applications and digital hardware. The main components of this type of change consist of the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, cloud computing, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Below, I dive a little deeper into each component. Discussion Going a little deeper into the web of digital transformation, IoT is the network of smart devices. This can be used for sharing data that would otherwise be stagnant without the assistance of being connected to this network. IoT has helped drive UAS in a way that allows for various app...

AT 309 Lab 1: Blog Creation

My name is Matthew Watson, and I am currently a junior majoring in Aviation Management with a minor in UAS. My UAS career actually started my sophomore year. Prior to then, my experience primarily revolved around flying RC copters as a child. Through Purdue University, I have exponentially grown my experience within the UAS industry. I have become 14 CFR Part 107 certified and have gotten to minimally fly drones during the summer of 2020. During my studies for the various UAS courses that I have become enrolled in, I have found an interest within Geospatial Data. In a later course, AT 209, we got to use geospatial data for an actual search and rescue; I found much enjoyment while going through the extensive data set and looking at potential matches to the type of clothing the missing person was wearing when last seen. As far as what my career aspirations are, I would either like to work as a Geospatial Data Analyst or a position within Revenue Management for a major airline. ...
